StarMetro’s Route Decentralization Plan wins the American Planning Association (APA) National Planning Excellence Award for Transportation Planning 2013. The new system allows people to move around the city much more easily and with increased bus frequency, it will take less time to arrive at their destination. In short, the bus will move you around town in a manner more like you would drive your car. In less than a year, ridership increased by a record breaking 15%, on time buses improved an unprecedented 25%, and travel time for customers decreased an average of 35%.
In addition to the new route structure, more than 50 new bus shelters and benches were installed, new sidewalks and improvements were made at bus stops. Bus stops signs now include braille lettering and each sign includes Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) numbers so customers can send a text and receive bus arrival information in real time.
